How to Successfully Grow Basil from Seed 🌱 I love growing my own basil and it’s one of my favourite companions to plant in the garden alongside my tomatoes, however it can be a tricky to grow from seed and overwatering is a common mistake. 💦🌱😓 A mature Basil plant needs plenty of water, but as a seedling it does not and they can easily be overwatered causing issues like edema. Basil seeds are very small and air is a vital component to the seedlings early development. So I use a good open structured organic seed starting mix but then add even more vermiculite to increase aeration. I then add some to a pot, sprinkle in some seeds and cover with a very thin layer of compost, you could even do without adding any though as they will be often be pressed into the compost deep enough by watering alone. I water really well once after seeding and leave them somewhere warm to germinate, on a sunny windowsill or propagator, and I won’t water again until they have. Then I just prick them out into their own module or pot and keep watering to a minimum until they reach a few inches tall at which point they can be planted out and watering can then be increased. So will you be growing your own basil from seed this season? If so, I hope that helps 😊🌱 #gardeningtips #basil #growingfromseed #organicgardening #growyourownfood
