Happy Ash Wednesday Everybody! It Is Now Officially Lent. During This Time Of Year, We Turn Our Minds To Repentance And Fast In Order To Discipline Our Minds And Bodies. As Catholics, We Abstain From Meat On Ash Wednesday And Fridays During Lent. Historically, However, Lent Was Far More Demanding. Christians Ate Only One Meal A Day And Abstained From All Animal Products. So For Every Day Of Lent, There Was No Dairy, Eggs, And Fish. Meat Was Avoided Every Friday Of The Year Outaide Of Lent As Well Today The Church Requires Abstinence From Meat On Fridays Of Lent (And Fasting On Ash Wednesday And Good Friday). Fish, Dairy, And Eggs Are Permitted. But This Is Where We Have To Understand The Difference Between The Letter Of The Law And The Spirit Of The Law When I First Returned To Catholicism About Five Or Six Years Ago, I Learned We Weren’t Supposed To Eat Meat On Lenten Fridays, So I Went Out And Bought A Huge Vegetarian Pizza, Breadsticks, And A Side Of Ranch Technically This Was Correct, But Is This Really What We Were Meant To Do For Lent? We Don’t Abstain From Meat Just For The Sake Of Avoiding Meat. Fasting And Abstinence Are Meant To Make Us Poor, To Detach Us From Comfort, Humble Us, And Turn Our Attention Toward Repentance And God. Lent Is A Time To Recall Our Baptism, Or Prepare For It If You’re A Catechumen. You Might Be Avoiding Meat, But Are You Really Living The Spirit Of Lent If You’re Enjoying A Luxurious Seafood Boil? For Centuries, Christians Voluntarily Gave Up Comforts And Luxuries During These Forty Days. People Would Give Up •Sweets •Alcohol •Smoking •Social Media •Music •Unnecessary Spending But Lenten Discipline Doesn’t Only Mean Removing Something, It Can Also Mean Adding Something To Your Routine. Consider Adding One Of These: •Pray A Rosary Or Chaplet Daily •Start Going To To Daily Mass •Spend Time Before The Blessed Sacrament •Read Scripture Every Day •Take The Stairs Instead Of The Elevator •Give To Charity Regularly .
